To the Northwest, McConnell's Mill State Park is home to Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a National Natural Landmark where the steep cliffs are popular for rock climbing and rappelling. Lake Erie borders the state's northwest corner, where there's plenty of boating and off-shore fishing opportunities, plus the only surf beach in the Commonwealth at Presque Isle State Park. There are also four wineries within the area to enjoy the fruits of Pennsylvania vines. Lake Erie and hundreds of freshwater lakes and streams hold 30 species of game fish for the avid angler. The lush environment has plenty of wildlife as well, with whitetail deer, bear, game birds and other creatures inhabiting the forests, fields and state game lands. Over 600 public and private golf courses can be found throughout the state, nestled in diverse landscapes, from the rugged mountains to peaceful lake-country vistas. Winter brings plenty of snow to the region, with 24 ski areas such as those in the Pocono Mountains, with slopes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
