Denver Region, CO
The Denver region of Colorado is the most populated in the state, is home to Denver, the state capital, and is full of mountainous state parks for any outdoors enthusiast. Denver is located in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Included in this region are the adjacent counties of Jefferson County and Douglas County.

Jefferson County is located along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and it is adjacent to the state capital of Denver. Mount Zion, a landmark located near Golden Colorado, is a foothill of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with a symbolic white M made of rocks placed and retrieved by students of the Colorado School of Mines as they start and finish college.

Douglas County is lightly wooded, mostly with ponderosa pine, with broken terrain characterized by mesas, foothills and small streams. Cherry Creek and Plum Creek rise in Douglas County and flow north toward Denver and into the South Platte River. Three state parks fall within Douglas County, Castlewood Canyon State Park, Chatfield State Park, and Rodborough State Park. Parts of the county lie within the Pike National Forest and were crossed by the historic South Platte Trail.
