Southwest Region, CO
The Southwest region of Colorado has nonstop outdoor adventures from enormous state parks to vast lakes and massive national forests. This region offers two national parks (Mesa Verde National Park and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park), scenic byways and more lakes and rivers than any other part of the state.

The San Juan Mountains provide year round outdoor adventures. Winter snow provides world-famous skiing at Crested Butte, Telluride, Durango, and Silverton. For years, the annual runoff provided streams and rivers that formed fantastic gorges, such as the 2,660-foot-deep Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Many of these waters are fishable, too, holding trophy-size trout and kokanee salmon.

Moving south, the terrain changes from pine-forested alpine slopes to semi-arid high deserts. This area provides numerous farms and ranches but is also rich in natural and human history. The bluffs and plateaus in the Four Corners area are home to 10,000-year-old hot springs.

Nearby, at Mesa Verde National Park and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument are well-preserved archeological ruins. This national park offers some of the country's most stunningly complete records of what life was like for the Ancestral Puebloans, who built entire cities inside gaping caves.
