North Central/West Region, MN
The North Central/West region of Minnesota spans from Kittson County, Roseau County and Lake of the Woods County to the north, down to Stevens County, Pope County, Stearns County and Sherburne County to the south. The region borders North Dakota and South Dakota to the west and Canada to the north. St. Cloud is the largest city in the region by far, with Alexandria, Brainerd and Grand Rapids also being cities in the region.

The northern area has many softwood forests, including Chippewa National Forest, which spans more than 650,000 acres and contains over 1,300 lakes, as well as rivers, streams and 400,000 acres of wetlands. The largest lakes are Mille Lacs Lake and Leech Lake, the largest in Minnesota. The Mississippi river also winds through the region. In the west and the south, there are rolling prairies, with the largest agricultural operations in the region. In the east, the region has a large number of hardwood and softwood forests, and at one time had rich iron ore deposits, which have now been depleted.

Agriculture is important to the economy, but in more recent years, industry and service areas have grown. More agriculture takes place in the southern and western areas of the region, where the land and soil supports growing crops such as corn and soybeans. Dairy farms are more common in the areas where crops cannot be grown easily. Logging activity is not as common as it has been historically, but paper companies still utilize the extensive forested areas. Tourism has become an important industry in the last few decades, due to the large number of lakes in the area. There are a large number of seasonal residents coming from nearby metropolitan areas. There are several universities in this region, including Bemidji State University, College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University and St. Cloud State University.

Crow Wing County is located in the southeastern part of this region. The county is named for the Crow Wing River, which is named for a river island shaped like the wing of a crow. Brainerd is the largest city, and other larger cities in the region are Baxter, Pequot Lakes and Nisswa. There are a number of other small cities and townships. The county has two state forests, Crow Wing State Forest and Emily State Forest, as well as the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail. Much of the land has gentle hills or is flat, with some waters and wetlands interspersed with the woodlands. There are many lakes and rivers, with the main river being the Mississippi River. There are 417 recognized lakes, with the largest being Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, Upper and Lower White Fish Lake and North Long Lake, allowing plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, kayaking and other activities.

Otter Tail County is located in the southwest of Minnesota's North Central/West region. The largest city is Fergus Falls, which is also the county seat; other larger cities are Pelican Rapids and Perham, but there are a number of other small cities and townships, and those listed would be considered somewhat small. The county has more than 1,000 lakes and has two state parks, Maple Wood State Park and Glendalough State Park. The highest point in Otter Tail County is Inspiration Peak in the Leaf Mountains, 1,750 feet above sea level.

Cass County is located toward the southeast in the North Central/West region of Minnesota. It is named for Lewis Cass, who was governor of the Michigan Territory in the early 1800's. Walker is the county seat, and is a very small city. Other cities close to the same size include East Gull Lake and Lake Shore, and there are a large number of other small cities, townships and unincorporated communities. A large part of Leech Lake Indian Reservation is located in Cass County. A part of the Chippewa National Forest is also in this county. There are many lakes in this county especially good for fishing, and include Leech Lake, Gull Lake, Lake Winnibigoshish, Woman Lake and Ten Mile Lake as some of the largest, but there are approximately 50 other lakes. Some of the oldest Native American remains were found near Pelican Rapids.
