Capital/River Region, MS
Mississippi's Capital/River region is located in the southwest portion of the state, and Jackson, the state's capital, is located in this region. It is the largest urban center in Mississippi. In addition to museums, music houses, restaurants and shopping in a big city like Jackson, there are also acres of woodlands for hiking, bird watching, biking and canoeing and kayaking on the Pearl River, the second largest river in the state, Ross Barnett Reservoir and Pelahatchie Creek, to name a few. Another city of note in this region is Natchez, an antebellum city with beautiful southern mansions. Natchez Trace Parkway is more than 400 miles long and dates back hundreds of years, a national park with hiking, Indian mounds and natural history exhibits. Jackson has several major industries, which include electrical equipment, processed food, and metal products. The surrounding area products agricultural products, such as livestock, soybeans, cotton and poultry.

Madison County is located in the northern part of the Capital/River region of Mississippi. The county is named for U.S. President James Madison. Canton is the county seat, though one of the smaller cities; other larger cities are Madison and Ridgeland. A portion of Jackson is also in this county. Madison county is bordered by the Big Black River, and part of the Natchez Trace Parkway runs through it.

Hinds County borders Madison County to the north, and it is the most populous county in Mississippi and the third largest by land. The county seats are Raymond and Jackson, the state capital, and as mentioned, Jackson is the largest city in the state. Clinton and Byram are also cities in Hinds County. The county is named for General Thomas Hinds, a hero during the War of 1812, in the Battle of New Orleans. Hinds county is bordered by the Big Black River to the northwest, the Pearl River to the east and is a county away from the Yazoo River and the southern border of the Mississippi Delta. The county is home to Jackson State University, Mississippi College and School of Law, and University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Pike County is located in the southeastern part of this region of Mississippi. McComb is the largest city in this county and Magnolia is the county seat. The county is named for explorer Zebulon Pike, for which Pike's Peak in Colorado is also named. This area has many opportunities for "agritourism" with many farms and ranches open to the public, in addition to parks and natural areas for hiking, biking, bird watching and camping.
