Northwest Region, OH
The Northwest region of Ohio borders Lake Erie to the north, and Michigan and Indiana to the west. Some areas of this region are considered part of the Black Swamp, an area of glacier-fed wetlands. Toledo is the principal city in the region, with Findlay, Lima and Bowling Green also being large cities in the area. Toledo is a center for manufacturing, most notably auto manufacturing, solar products and plastics.

There are several areas along Lake Erie that are popular tourist spots in the summer. One attraction is Cedar Point, a popular amusement park in Sandusky, which draws visitors from all over the U.S. The Sandusky area also features five large indoor waterparks. There are also popular Lake Erie island destinations, such as Put-In-Bay, which features several wineries, restaurants and specialty shops. There are many opportunities for boating, water sports and beachgoing. Many areas in this region feature historical homes and sites for visitors as well.

Auglaize County is located in the southern part of this region and the largest city is Wapakoneta, which is also the county seat, with Saint Marys being the next largest, and in fact the only other city in this county. The Auglaize River crosses the county, as well as the Miami and Erie Canal. The Saint Marys River, the Great Miami River and the Scioto River are also located in this county, and portions of Grand Lake St. Marys and Lake Loramie. The economy of this county is based in manufacturing.

Allen County is also located toward the southern part of the Northwest Ohio region and the largest city is Lima, which is also the county seat, with Delphos being another city in this county. The county is named for Colonel John Allen, who led his men in the Battle of Frenchtown in the War of 1812 and was killed. It is best known for the Allen County Fair, the largest in the state with over 220,000 visitors and around 3,000 exhibitors.

Huron County is in the northern part of the Northwest Ohio region, nearer to Lake Erie. The largest city is Norwalk, which is also the county seat. Other cities in this county are Bellevue and Willard and there are many other small villages and townships. The county was named in honor of the Huron Native Americans, an Iroquoian- speaking tribe which occupied areas of the Great Lakes region.
