Puget Sound Region, WA
The Puget Sound region is characterized by saltwater bays, islands and peninsulas. It is nicknamed "Ish River Country" due to the numerous rivers with names ending in "ish," such as the Duwamish River, Samish River, Skokomish River, Skykomish River, Snohomish River and Stillguamish River. The "ish" ending comes from the Salish language which means "people of." This region is centered around the city of Seattle, with the urban center cities of Tacoma and Olympia nearby, forming what has been called "Pugetopolis." Seattle and Tacoma have large industrial areas and seaports, as well as a central business district. They are primarily suburban with a small downtown core. There are numerous ports in the region, with the largest and busiest being the Port of Seattle and Port of Tacoma, which combined equal the third largest container port in North America.

Whatcom County is located in the northern part of the Puget Sound Region and borders Canada to its north. The largest city and county seat is Bellingham. The county is known for being geared toward cross-border shopping and recreation, with five border crossing points. Geographically, the county includes Lake Whatcom, Bellingham Bay and Whatcom Creek. It is the lowland delta plain of the Fraser River. It is also home to Birch Bay State Park and Larrabee State Park.

Skagit County is south of Whatcom County in the Puget Sound Region. Skagit County includes a fertile valley of the Skagit River, which is a center for cultivation of tulips and strawberries. It also contains land that is part of Mount Baker-Snoqalmie National Forest, North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area and Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail. Larger cities in the area are Anacortes and Mount Vernon.

Snohomish County is south of Skagit County in the Puget Sound Region. It is the third populous county in the state of Washington. The largest city is Everett, which is also the county seat. The county's terrain consists of plains in the west and mountainous terrain in the east, as the Cascade Range passes through the eastern part. It contains Mount Baker National Forest and part of Snoqualmie National Forest, as well as several rivers.
