By 1910 most of the U.P.'s virgin pine was cut and the mill operation declined. About 1920 Henry Ford decided that the Ford Motor Company should control its own sources of raw materials, and began surveying land in the U.P., especially around L'Anse. Ford purchased 400,000 acres of land in the area including the mill and the town. Ford built railroads, modernized the mill, and remodeled the homes - equipping them with electricity and running water. The sawmill supplied the Rouge Plant in Lower Michigan, with wood for station wagons. The Ford era ended when automobile production reached a standstill during the Great Depression. But at the beginning of WWII the mills were reopened and operated 24-hours a day. The mills closed in 1942 and the lumber camps and village were abandoned.
