Wheat and the late Sarah Jane Wheat. This beautiful historic gem built in 1852 is the only to escape the wrath of General Sherman during his occupation of Meridian and the surrounding area. This magnificent structure was built by William B. Trotter, originally of Tennessee, who was an attorney in Quitman. In 1845 Trotter was a candidate for fourth district attorney and colonel of the thirty-first regiment of the Mississippi Militia; later in 1847 he was elected brigadier general.
