History of 174 Hemlock Hollow Road, Benton, PA
This seven and a half acres of land was originally part of a larger farm that dates back to the mid-1800s. A tributary of Fishing Creek runs along the property, providing water for a lumber mill as the main source of income for original landowners. The mill race and large stone wall built for the runoff can still be found when walking along a path flanked by rhododendron on both sides. The siding on the barn was replaced in 1990s by the current owners, with wood cut from trees on the land. Its been said that one couple who owned the property in the 1920s held square dances in the barn, the husband providing music with his fiddle. The double-plank house with its original stone foundation has three bedrooms and one bath upstairs, a full bath on the first floor that also houses laundry facilities, and a living room that can double as a bedroom for guests. The house has been restored and renovated by the current owners, exposing the wooden beams in the living room (original parlor) and dining room (original kitchen), and adding a closet to the living room, built-in shelves, and access to the downstairs bath. Closets were also added to two of the original bedrooms upstairs, with built-in shelves added to the master bedroom. The kitchen, added on in the fifties, was updated in the 1980s. In 2001, a bathroom and guest bedroom, with walk-in closet, was added to the upstairs. On warm summer nights when the windows are open, guests enjoy the cool breezes and sound of the stream running behind the house.
