1812-1815...when "The Oaks" was built by Captain Thomas Lyles. Same dates as The War of 1812. Same time frame when Napolean was defeated at Waterloo and when a series of earthquakes shook North America so badly the Mississippi River changed its course! Maybe that's why Captain Lyles included Earthquake Rods in the design of this gorgeous brick house. Rather than wood siding, which was the custom for the area, he built it to last with 16" thick walls! And it has. Around 1825 it is reputed to have been the Buckhead Post Office and evidence of the old Philadelphia Wagon Trail can still be seen at the front of the property. Buckhead is gone, as are the nearly 1,000 wagons carrying supplies that passed through monthly. When Sherman's troops marched through Buckhead, the owner was bedridden. Those Yankee soldiers set a fire under his bed, but the farm workers loved him so much, they risked their own lives to put out the fire. In the dining room today, you can still see evidence of charred floors. As a matter of fact, much of the house has remained original and is still quite charmingly rustic. It stands proudly without being overly embellished or modernized. The handmade staircase with its twists and turns and total disregard for today's building codes has survived intact with no apologies!
