The Central West region of Florida offers a variety of landscapes. To the west are beautiful beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. Inland are very rural areas in the counties of Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Manatee, and DeSoto. The central part of the Central West Florida region is urban with large populations in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater.
The northern part of this region offers the Crystal River Preserve State Park. This park offers natural beauty, undisturbed islands, inlets, backwaters, and forests that are appreciated by nature lovers and photographers. The park borders 20 miles of the northern Gulf Coast between the two cities of Yankeetown and Homosassa. Outdoor activities include bicycling along nine miles of trails, fishing at Mullet Hole, or paddling a kayak or canoe into the waters of the scenic Crystal River.
Agriculture is prominent in the counties of Pasco County and Hillsborough County with the largest crop being strawberries. Both of these counties offer numerous parks and trails but parts of these counties are transitioning from forested and agricultural areas to suburban developments.
Not far from the town of Venice, Florida is Oscar Scherer Sate Park. The park is the one of the best places to see Florida scrub-jays, a threatened species found only in Florida. Fifteen miles of trails through these beautiful natural areas provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and wildlife viewing. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle along South Creek, a blackwater stream that flows to the Gulf of Mexico.
