History

The town of Penrose, Colorado,

originated as the Beaver Creek settlement and was later known as Glendale. It was incorporated as Fremont in 1908 before being renamed Penrose in 1909 after businessman Spencer Penrose, who was investing in the area’s water rights. The town is known for its historical agricultural roots, its connection to the railroad, and its modern status as a farming community with a link to the Broadmoor Hotel and other landmarks in the region.

Early Settlement: The area was initially a stagecoach stop along Beaver Creek, with a post office established in 1868. Early settlers farmed the land, and the community was known as Glendale.

Spencer Penrose’s Influence: In 1907, Spencer Penrose, a successful mining entrepreneur, bought water rights in the area and created the town of Fremont in 1908. When the post office was moved from Glendale in 1909, the town was renamed Penrose in his honor.

Railroad and Agriculture: A railroad, the Penrose, Beaver and Northern Railroad, was built in 1909 to transport the local agricultural products, especially fruits and vegetables, to a cannery located at the train station near the current-day Apple Shed.

Community and Legacy: The town continued to grow into the early 1910s with new shops and schools. In 1915, Spencer Penrose donated a statue, known as the Boy with the Boot, to the town, which remains a prominent landmark.
