About the Architect
Noted Aberdeen architect Clarence George was born on Bainbridge Island in 1890. He grew up in Tacoma, WA, and graduated from Stadium High School. After graduating, he went on to work for the architectural firm of Heath, Gove & bell in Tacoma from 1911 until 1912, then he relocated to Aberdeen and worked for Troutman & Haynes from 1913 to 1914. In 1915 George began his architectural education at the University of Washington. However, his studies were cut short when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving overseas in WWI. After the war, George returned to Aberdeen and became the chief draftsman for Troutman & Haynes from 1919 until 1924 and rose to an Associate level in 1925. The following year George decided to open his own firm. Reportedly by 1940, his office had grown to four draftsmen, and many of his designs were being featured in various national and regional publications. Aberdeen became an important center for Plywood development from the 1930s until the 1950s; George positioned himself to take advantage of his local connections, utilizing plywood in many of his designs. Among them was his design for A.Robert Wuest, manager of Harbor Plywood, the original owner of 303 W 9th St, Aberdeen, WA.
