This beautiful Greek Revival cottage is nestled in the heart of the picturesque Murfreesboro Historic District. This home was built by a prosperous landowner around 1840 close to nearby Severn, NC. Around 1875, the owners left the farm to build a new home in Murfreesboro. It is thought that the cottage became the residence for the person the family left to “oversee” the farm, and it is known to this day as ‘The Overseer’s House.’ Both the house and the original office from the farm were moved to this current site in the charming historic district. The office sits in the rear yard and would make an ideal office, guest suite or studio. The home has about 1,500 square feet and the guest cottage is about 16’ x 16’. When the house was mo...
When the house was moved to its current location in the early 1990’s, the restoration included new chimneys, a brick foundation, wiring, plumbing, new interior walls and a new roof. The home has just undergone a second major restoration and has earned the new nickname ‘Little Mansion.’ New items include custom screen doors, custom interior shutters, new heat & a/c to original portion of house, new insulation in attic, new paint, repair to railings and porches, a large new closet in the rear bedroom and a new ½ bath in the front bedroom. The original office sits in the rear yard and has also been through a complete restoration, including new siding, new roof, plumbing ‘roughed-in’ for a potential bathroom or kitchen and new heat and a/c. The front porch has double doors surrounded by lovely glass sidelights and leads into a large central foyer, currently used as a summer dining room. To the right of the foyer is the master bedroom with a private ½ bath. On the other side of the foyer is a dining room/living room combination. The home has a lovely addition where you will find a second bedroom, bathroom and a newly updated kitchen. Features include beautiful 6-over-6 windows, heart-pine floors, 4 fireplaces and high ceilings. The central foyer also leads onto the back porch which is framed by wisteria. The 0.9 acre lot has also been landscaped to provide a private and tranquil retreat. There is a new garden shed that has been sided with the salvaged office siding. A new riding lawnmower and a shed full of garden tools convey. The property has town water/sewer/trash pickup. Appliances in the kitchen convey and include a refrigerator, new stackable washer/dryer, dishwasher, new gas range, wall oven and a new over-the-range microwave. A new ‘on demand’ hot water heater has been installed and will offer an endless supply of hot water while saving you money. The Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places; the home may qualify for a discount on local property taxes. The historic town of Murfreesboro was established as an original “King’s Landing” on the banks of the Meherrin River. We embrace our rich history and have an active Historic Association, with volunteers coming together to provide tours in our Historic District, the annual Candlelight Christmas tour and Pork Fest. Recently revitalized, downtown Murfreesboro is only a short walk away and is home to many restaurants and shops. Murfreesboro is home to Chowan University, which offers many opportunities for cultural and sporting events. Numerous churches and civic organizations promise a warm welcome and offer many ways to become involved in our friendly community. We are just an hour from Tidewater, Virginia, about 45 minutes from Roanoke Rapids, home of the new “Carolina Crossroads,” and about 1 1/2 hours to the famous NC Outer Banks. The local rivers provide many opportunities for water sports and fishing. Within walking distance to downtown shops & restaurants. This is a unique property!
