The 443 acre Howe Creek Timber Tract is located 4 miles from the company town of Scotia and Humboldt Redwood Companys sawmill complex along the Eel River and Highway 101. The City of Eureka is 20 miles to the north. The Howe Creek Tract was featured in the October 2009 National Geographic Magazine story Redwoods The Super Trees on how the silvicultural method of functional thinning had generated a significant increase in height, volume and quality of timber inventory at Howe Creek. This method of functional thinning has been the timber management strategy used throughout the Kahn portfolio for over 20 years by James L. Able Forestry, timberland manager.

There is an estimated 16,422 MBF of primarily second growth redwood, with some Douglas-fir, at an average volume of over 38 MBF per acre the highest volume average of all the Kahn timberland tracts based on an updated cruise report completed by James L. Able Forestry in January, 2011. (See Supplemental Information Package for cruise report). There is a nominal amount of tan oak at Howe Creek.
The forest site classification is II, with the tract having moderate north, east and west facing slopes. Howe Creek Road is along the eastern boundary and Oil Creek, tributary to Eel River, is located within the western section of the tract.
There is access to the property from Howe Creek Road and from a logging road, with crossings over Oil Creek. An estimated 85% of the tract may be logged using ground-based logging system.
Timber Harvest Plan 1-08-005 HUM covers 419 acres, or 97% of the tract, and does not expire until May, 2013. The last harvest was 1,972 MBF in 2008. It is estimated that an additional 11,200 MBF could be harvested under the existing THP, based on current regulations.
The Howe Creek tract has competitive log markets at nearby Scotia and sawmills to the north in Arcata, Korbel and Eureka and south to Willits, Ukiah and Cloverdale. Log export operations in Eureka are an easy haul from Howe Creek.
Adjoining owners are Humboldt Redwood Company and several private ranches.
