The Caiman Ranch (Headquarters Pasture) was originally part of the 250,000 acre Callaghan Ranch, and had been in the same family since 1947 (up until 2008). The ranch was named for the animal similar to the crocodile or alligator, often seen in Los Olmos Creek, which runs through the western section of the property. The Caiman Ranch is located in southern LaSalle County, about 140 miles south of San Antonio, Texas, 55 miles northeast of Laredo, Texas, and 20 miles east of Encinal, Texas. The property is entirely perimeter fenced and cross fenced into 4 pastures. The eastern boundary has 8' net wire game proof fencing, and the remaining boundaries are fenced with typical barbed wire. There is a 4,280 foot deep water well out of the Carrizo Aquifer, supplying water to the headquarters area, one stock tank, and various water troughs. There is a 4,200 square foot, 6 bedroom, 5 bath Spanish style hacienda, complete with deep porches, and a large walled courtyard surrounding the main house, complimented by a traditional outdoor fountain. The hacienda is on a concrete slab, with a stucco exterior, saltillo tile floors, and mostly 9 foot ceilings. There is also a 1,700 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bath foreman's house; a 2,665 square foot barn; a 1,640 square foot implement shed; and a 600 square foot workshop, all located in the headquarters area.
This South Texas area has long been known as the "Promised Land" for bruiser, whitetail bucks with it's level to gently rolling country, laced with a combination of live oaks, mesquite, elm, and hackberry trees, and native South Texas brush. The Caiman Ranch has the reputation as one of the best whitetail deer ranches in Texas. The only way to appreciate the quality of habitat, management and deer is to take a look at the pictures. The deer taken from this ranch have consistently won local deer contests including Los Cazadores, the Muy Grande, and the Cola Blanca.
