LAND & ACCESS: The property is 40 acres of heavily wooded land with scattered outcroppings of mossy rock. The land is moderately sloped with a few level areas; fenced on 3 sides. An unpaved county road meanders through national forest and privately owned land and across a creek bed. During heavy rains this creek may make the road impassable for most vehicles for brief periods. The quarter.mile drive from the property line to the cabin is best traveled in a 4 wd vehicle.
Locally cut and/or reclaimed lumber was used to build the bunkhouse, chicken coop, outdoor toilet, and for wall paneling inside the main cabin.
SERVICES: There are no utilities or delivery services. There are two cisterns (one approx 300 gallon and one 1500 gallon) for rainwater collection, a small gasoline powered generator, wood-burning cook stove, wood-burning heaters. According to the seller, the nearest electric lines are approximately a mile away.
HOME: The main cabin was custom-designed and hand-built by a local draftsman as his family home. According to county records, the 416 sf cabin was built in 1999. The single room floor plan include a sleeping area equipped with a double bed, enough room for 2 recliners, a kitchen area (with a hand pump that brings water to the sink), 2 dining tables and chairs. There are numerous shelves and cabinets for storage. The wood-burning cook stove dates back to the 1880s. The walls and ceiling have 4 inch insulation; windows and doors have double-pane glass.
LOFT: The loft has a catwalk that spans the length of the cabin. There is another sleeping area with a twin bed at one end of the catwalk and a storage area at the other end of the catwalk. A basket and rope attached to pulley system allows you to transport items to and from the loft area.
The seller had a garden spot, grapevines, and mature blueberry bushes scattered around.
BUNKHOUSE: Located about 50 yards from the main cabin, the bunkhouse is smaller and more rustic. It measures approximately 15 ft x 25 ft (including the covered porch. It is a single room with built-in, dorm-sized bunk beds, a small table, bookcase, and glass fronted Ben Franklin style wood heater. The bunkhouse is uninsulated, board-and-batt construction.
CHICKEN COOP: A small structure with an enclosed chicken yard.
OUTDOOR TOILET: The seller describes this as a simple composting system.
Materials from an old hay barn on the property were used to build this.
.
There is a small deck near the main cabin, a variety of covered storage areas for firewood & equipment, and a covered 8 ft long picnic table with a smoker/grill. If you take delight in the startled run of a dozen wild turkeys or enjoy the pungent tang of wet oak leaves mushing underfoot; if you find pleasure in yellow sycamore leaves and red dogwood berries and appreciate the sharp odor of freshly cut hickory, youve found your heaven on earth here in this wooded acreage.
If youve always dreamed of a peaceful retreat and your idea of quiet is a gurgling stream after the rain and coyotes calling or tree frogs singing; if absolute solitude is your favorite companion and you would appreciate a place so remote one can shower outdoors; if you long for a spot in which to commune with nature and natures God, this remote mountain cabin was built with you in mind.
If you dont mind the challenge of carrying out the ash pan; cutting and stacking firewood and burning brush; if youd enjoy learning to bake spicy fruit pies in a century-old wood cook stove and youre physically fit enough to carry water in from a cistern or pull it with a hand pump; if youve always wanted to pick blueberries from your own garden and sleep with all the windows and doors open, you can finally experience these things here in the Ouachita Mountains.
If youd love to explore the pine woods and walk where the Choctaws once hunted bear; if you delight in thunder rolling in from echoing hills and fog lifting off distant peaks; if sitting silent in a tree stand until your fingers and toes are numb is your kind of recreation; if youd enjoy being a twenty-minute drive away from the nearest highway and not being bothered by humans for days at a time, you simply must have this fully-furnished cabin with a loft in the midst of pine woods with a view of Winding Stair Mountain and the Talimena Drive.
