Late summer mud flats offer shorebird viewing at the west and south inlets to the reservoir. There are three sections to this river: the upper, middle, and lower section. The upper section has brushy lined riverbanks that flows for 50 miles though the valley. The middle section has more steep canyon formations with good access. The river here is deep and slow. The lower section has many branches and braids with cottonwood trees that line the bank. The Jefferson River is predominantly a brown trout river, but the rainbows are making a comeback. The Jefferson doesnt pose a high pressure for fishing, so it is mostly quiet and peaceful. The best fly fishing is found in the upper section of the river. A boat is best for fishing this river so that you can get to the deep spots. It also makes a great floating river.
