The Ojibwe used the same name for the river that the historic Menominee tribe who lived along the river shores, and used rice as a food staple.  The Chippewa lived in the northern portion of the river basin and called the river Me-ne-cane Sepe, or “Many Little Islands River”.  Early French Jesuit priests traveled the river on their missionary trips, and called the river the “Wild Oats River”, referring to the wild rice.   MLS# 50072653
