This 500' of Lake Superior sand beach is located in north-central Marquette County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and includes an adjacent 640 acres of forest with a mile of undeveloped Lake Superior beach, which is owned and shared by this property and 16 others. The Saux Head Point Owners Association lands also include a common access site with 200 feet on Saux Head Lake. The land is steeped in history beginning with the beautiful protected cove created by a rocky granite point of land projecting into Lake Superior called Saux Head Point. Louis G. Kaufman, a Marquette banker who did the architectural planing and helped finance the building of the Empire State Building in New York City, purchased 40,000 acres along this Lake Superior shoreline. His father, S. R. Kaufman built his over 5,000 sq. ft . log lodge on the east side of Saux Head Lake. A little further to the east, Louis in 1919 built "the biggest log cabin in the world", his 26,000 square foot lodge call Granot Luoma Farm. A favorite camping spot of the Pennsylvania Shiras Family was Saux Head Island, now called Garlic Island. George Shiras III, a lawyer, legislator, and naturalist became known worldwide as the first to photograph wildlife at night, and with the endorsement of this friend President Teddy Roosevelt succeeded in passing his famed migratory bird legislation to protect water fowl. The Saux Head Point Association lands was once a part of the Granot Luoma property. Towering red and white pines are found throughout the property that provide a layer of soft needles for walking through the woods. All this wilderness and beautiful sunsets are only 14 miles from Marquette, the Queen City of the North, where you have all the amenities of a large city, including an international airport.
