The Coastal region of Mississippi is the area of Southern Mississippi that borders the Gulf of Mexico. The three counties on the gulf are prime spots for vacationers, where visitors can enjoy the beach, watercrafts and delicious seafood. State parks in this area offer opportunities for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and there are several golf courses in the area. With the temperate climate, outdoor activities can be enjoyed year-round. Gulfport and Biloxi are major cities in this area, and also feature an active art and theater scene.
Harrison County is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and it is the second most populous county in the state, and the second-largest by area. The county is named in honor of U.S. President William Henry Harrison. Biloxi and Gulfport are the county seats. Other larger cities include D'Iberville and Long Beach. Portions of the De Soto National Forest and Gulf Islands National Seashore are also in this county. Being on the shore, the area offers the beach and related activities, casinos, and a variety of shops, restaurants, hotels and resorts.
Hancock County is also located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and is the southernmost point in Mississippi. It borders Louisiana to the west. It was named for John Hancock, one of the country's founding fathers. Bay St. Louis is the county seat, and other cities are Diamondhead and Waveland.
