As indicated by the name, Glacier Country in Northwestern Montana spans miles of glacier-carved landscapes, pristine lakes, waterfalls, woods and mountain peaks. Glacier National Park is a highlight of the area, with beautiful scenery for hiking, biking, boating, fishing and other outdoor activities.

Flathead County is located a short distance from Glacier National Park, and the main economic bases are recreation and tourism, with hiking areas, ski resorts, golf courses and lakes, including Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the Western United States. The National Bison Range is also located here, a well-known refuge to view bison and other wildlife, which draws many visitors. Additional prominent industries include construction, agriculture and some manufacturing. The largest city is Kalispell, and Flathead is the third most populated county in Montana.

Ravalli County and Missoula County are both located close to the Idaho border. Ravalli County is home to the Bitterroot National Forest and the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. Situated in the Bitterroot Valley, it is also a tourist destination for its beautiful natural scenery. The city of Missoula, located in the county of the same name, is in the heart of the Northern Rockies and is home to the University of Montana.
