Gold West Country in Southwestern Montana was named for the historical success of gold mining, with many famous cities in the area founded as boom towns during the "gold rush" in the 1800's, such as Helena, Butte and Last Chance Gulch. With half the area covered by national forest, lakes and rivers, it features scenic tours through mountain passes, and some beautiful areas for boating, river rafting, fishing and hunting.
Lewis and Clark County is named for the famous explorers, who made a stop in Helena, Montana's state capital, on their expedition to the Pacific in the early 1800's. The county is home to several forests, with highlights being the Helena National Forest and Lewis and Clark National Forest.
