Tucked away on a quiet gravel road, Potato Hill holds many possibilities. It is suitable as a hunting property, woodland weekend escape, or a full time residence with mountain views. It is not known where the name of the property comes from. Some residents of the area say they think it was actually a potato farm at some point and others say it comes from the unique shape of the land, calling to mind a potato. Whatever the real story is, Potato Hill does not lack character. An old stone chimney sits hidden in the woods, a reminder of by-gone days. There is an old stone wall, interesting rock outcroppings, lots of native stone to use for your building projects, and some beautiful glades hidden in the forest.

One of the potential building sites is a relatively level area part way up the hill. There could be a mountain view with the clearing of some trees. An access road that follows along the old stone wall has already been cut into the property and a four-bedroom septic construction permit (although now expired) was approved in 1998 for a prior owner. The proposed house was never built and the current owner has embraced the wild feel of the property. It has been used lightly as an escape from the stresses of city life, with only a bare-bones cabin, with nothing more than four walls, for occasional shelter during overnight camping trips.
Rappahannock and surrounding counties offer endless recreational possibilities. Located close to Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail, Potato Hill would be a perfect jumping-off point for weekend adventures. Looking for cultural activities? Visit one of the many art galleries, attend a play or a concert at one of the theaters, or visit the Rappahannock Historical Societys museum. Head in the other direction and Front Royal is about 10 minutes away. Just over the mountain, the Shenandoah River offers canoeing, kayaking, tubing and fishing. There are wineries and breweries, great restaurants and cafes, antique stores, farms and orchards, and much more.
Located only about an hour and a half from Washington, DC, and about the same from from Charlottesville, Potato Hill is an easy drive for a weekend getaway yet it feels a world away. Its proximity to Front Royal, with many options for shopping, dining and services, and also to I-66, makes it ideal for a full time resident as well.
