Mitchell was established in 1900, when theChicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroadwas extended westward to that point.It was named after the historicFort Mitchellnearby, which had been named afterGeneral Robert B. Mitchell, abrigadier generalin theUnion Armyduring theAmerican Civil War.Mitchell was incorporated as a city in 1902.

Scottsbluff is the largest city in theNebraska Panhandle, and the13th-most-populous city in Nebraska.

Scottsbluff was founded in 1899 across theNorth Platte Riverfrom its namesake, a bluff that is now protected by theNational Park ServiceasScotts Bluff National Monument. The monument was named afterHiram Scott, a fur trader with theRocky Mountain Fur Companywho was found dead in the vicinity on the return trip from a fur expedition.
