Grindstone island is the 4th largest of the Thousand Islands in the St. lawrence river. The island contains Potters beach, a private vineyard owned by the Purcell family, 4 active beef farms, island trails plus 40% of the island has protected lands under conservation easements through the Thousand Island Land Trust. Lumber & granite quarries were important to the early economy and later cheese production. The Grindstone Island Upper Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
