Area Description

Live Oak County, Texas wasformed from parts of San Patricio and Nueces Counties in 1856. The county's name is derived from the largeLive Oak treesthat thrived in the area.Early settlers, primarily farmers and ranchers, relied on hunting and raising livestock for survival.Oakville was the initial county seat, but the county seat was later moved to George West.

Located in central Live Oak County, the city of George West was founded 1913 by George Washington West, rancher and civic leader, who secured a railroad route through Live Oak County and provided several municipal buildings and plots for others. Becoming the county seat in 1919, the city was a major market and shipping point for cattle and cotton (Texas State Historical Marker).

Big, sprawling landholdings are found in this part of Live Oak County, some exceeding 25,000 acres. The well-known author/writer J. Frank Dobie and multiple-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Phil Lyne are two of the most famous Live Oak County natives!

Some of the characteristics found here are beautiful rolling terrain with over 100 of elevation change, deep sandy loam soils, multiple fertile creek bottoms, big original growth native brush with multiple areas that are roller chopped.
