New York, nicknamed "The Empire State," is the fourth most populated and 27th largest in size in the U.S. at 54,475 square miles; it is seventh in population density. New York is also a center for education, with several large public universities, and several well-respected private universities, such as Columbia University in Upper Manhattan in New York City and Cornell University in Ithaca.
