The Southern region of New York is home to New York City, the most populated city in the country, but just north of New York City the region offers large state park areas, mountains, and lakes for nature lovers to benefit from.

Approximately 100 miles northwest of New York City you can find the Catskill Mountains. The Catskills, as they are often called, have a wide variety of outdoor opportunities and are a popular location for people to have vacation homes. The area is great for camping and some of the notable spots include Little Pond, Bear Spring Mountain, North-South Lake, and Mongaup Pond. There are also 5 downhill ski areas that include Hunter Mountain, Windham Mountain, Belleayre Mountain, Plattekill Mountain, and Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun. The Catskills also offers many roads and trails for both mountain biking and road biking.

The Hudson Valley is also worth visiting too, it runs north to south of the entire state along the eastern edge. The Hudson Valley is the oldest wine making and grape-growing region in the United States and it was established in 1677. Many wineries are located in the Hudson Valley, offering wine-tasting and wine festivals are also held in the valley too.

Beacon Mountain, the highest peak of the Hudson Highlands, is a popular area for hiking because of the extensive trails and expansive views. Lake Maratanza is a serene location with great views and is a perfect spots for an afternoon swim in the summer months.
