In 1924 A.C. Huidekoper wrote a narrative about his life and investments in western North Dakota in the late 1800’s, entitled “My Experiences and Investment in the Bad Lands of Dakota and Some of the Men That I Met There.” Mr. Huidekoper was the first large ranch operator in western North Dakota, as he ranched and hunted with Theodore Roosevelt and the Marquis de Mores near Medora.

In the memoirs of Mr. Huidekoper he writes that in 1882 he bought all of the railroad lands in Township 136, Range 102, (Slope) County, N.D. “It was the best township in the Bad Lands… There were lots of springs and the best stand of bull pine timber in that country.” “We arrived at the plateau over looking the Little Missouri. I think the view over the river valley with the fringe of cotton wood and the view for miles and miles of the Bad Lands was one of the most impressive sights that I have ever seen.”
